UP ACM 2nd GA, ‘06-’07

  • Date: July 20, 2006 (Thursday)
  • Time: 5:30 PM
  • Venue: MH 422-424

Too bad I won’t be able to come tomorrow (and I was so excited too!) because of a make-up class in EEE 41. *Sigh*

UP ACM has done it again!

This really makes me glad that I joined UP ACM! A lot of UP students may not have heard of it, but a lot of kids the org has reached out to sure do! GO UP ACM!

Taken from the UP ACM Blog:

We just won the Student Chapter Excellence Awards, for the second year in a row! (See email from ACM HQ below, with some spam-prone data removed.) And with last year’s victory, we can now call ourselves a three-time Chapter Excellence winner. Congratulations guys, we all deserve this triumph for our efforts and sacrifices.

Demonoid Pass

This post is outdated. The updated version of this post has been moved here: Demonoid Pass

After days of searching for a demonoid invitation and repeatedly checking back at Demonoid.com, I was finally able to register. I’m really, really excited right now, waiting for the activation email to appear in my inbox.

My excitement is slowly turning into dread.. I mean, it’s been a few minutes and it hasn’t arrive. Come on… *sweats*

Anyway, just to inform the other guys, registration is currently open for those looking for entry. If it closes before you learned of it, well, I guess I should just say that keep on checking back. I learned from Yahoo!7 Answers that registration opens once every two weeks (though I’m not entirely sure if it’s true), but heck, I got one when I checked right after reading that. So, check frequently!

Update: I’m still waiting (in vain as it seems) for that activation email.. Just how long does it take to arrive? Anybody?

Update 2: It’s been a day and it hasn’t arrived. I’m giving up. I’ll just try signing up again when it reopens. I don’t know what the problem is — if it is with GMail or with Demonoid itself. I wish Demonoid has a way of resending the activation email. As it is, I couldn’t have the confirmation resent, nor can I ask for a new password. I knew I shouldn’t have hesitated to sign up again when the mail didn’t arrive. But my conscience wouldn’t let me! I keep thinking of the unfortunate guy whose slot I will be stealing.. *sigh*

Update 3: The confirmation email still didn’t arrive, but I was able to login now. It seems they automatically activated the accounts created during their last opening. Yatta!

Update 4: This post has been getting a lot of hits (Demonoid sure is a big keyword), and it disappoints me. It feels like I’m leeching off of Demonoid’s name. Plus the post has absolutely nothing helpful in it. So to change that, here are tips.

  1. Make Demonoid your homepage. So that everytime you go online and fire up your browser, it automatically goes to the page and you’ll see if registration has reopened.
  2. Be more specific. When you find some blog/forum where you can ask for an invitation, be as specific as possible in what you need to download. Invitations are limited, so members are picky with the recipients of their codes. It would help you get an invitation from someone if you can provide a good reason why that someone should give you an invitation. It’s also good to promise and prove you’re not simply an ungrateful leecher.
  3. Be patient. This is the most important out of everything that’s been said, actually.

Also, be informed that invitations don’t always work; sometimes the site disallows new sign-ups despite having an invitation code. If that’s the case, try the code again some other time. Once you get in, show your appreciation: don’t just leech; do share and seed!

Which File Extension are You?

Probably because my answers seem contradicting. Too bad.

Zero innovation

My trip back home from our school almost made my day. The driver of the SM Jeepney I rode was an old, law-abiding one, who refused loading passengers where it’s prohibited. It makes me happy seeing rare people like that.

However, my good mood was ruined by what Mac pointed out earlier in the day: the EEE website. What of it?

eee.png berkeley.png

See? This totally reminds me of Orange and Lemons’ “Pinoy Ako” and “Chandeliers” of Care.

On one hand, I am glad they’re improving the EEE website, from this one to this. On the other, couldn’t they just have created and developed their own design? I mean, this, coming from a department who boasts of creativity and innovativeness? I don’t want to be so quick to judge, but come on. I just hope this is merely a phase, a passing and temporary one (transient response, anyone?). If they’re doing this for testing purposes, I sure hope it gets done real soon.

Let’s hope they have permission to copy the design from the UC Berkeley. That “Copyright © 2006 UP EEE Dept. All Rights Reserved.” at the bottom of the page just pissed me off.

First ACM GA

I haven’t been able to access UVLE for some time now. I’ve been trying since Friday. At first, it was only an error in connection to the database (so I couldn’t log in), now, I think the whole thing is freaking down.

Anyway, here’s what I’ve wanted to post since last week’s ACM GA.

Of course, they’re (the pics) nothing remarkable. After all, what’s the deal with the backs of people? *dryly* Anyway, I really want to get involved and participate in this org. Too bad I’m rather slow in my academics. Otherwise, I would gladly join all their activities. ACM, the best!

Quit and Restart

A lot of things happened today.. We went to KFC Katipunan for lunch, got scolded by the Manong Tricycle Driver on the way back, had classes on all of which I didn’t absorb a thing, got a new book for EEE 41, got my Hepa-B vaccine.

Today, I also quitted being a CC SA.

It was a little hard to make the decision, because I know that I’ll miss a lot of things when I leave. Things like the queue priority in CRS, the air-conditioned room (which feels so nice after walking from EEE), Mang Roger and Ate greeting you when you arrive, the friendly janitor in our floor, the lovely people of 301, and of course, the funny Dilnet bunch. But I knew I had to quit, and I don’t feel any regrets. I know I can’t handle programming and studying for my subjects at the same time (I just have that one-track mind). I guess it’s time to prioritize my studies for once. >=D

Anyway, I guess this means more time to myself, to acads, to friends and to orgs. I just hope this really makes a difference (considering my study habits).

By the way, Kuya Joel is looking for an SA (PHP Programmer). If you know someone who’s interested, contact me and I’ll refer you to Kuya Joel. Hopefully, before the end of June (Kuya Joel said he really needs one).

New School Year

This sucks. Vacation officially ends today (thanks to Independence Day it was extended another day).

Maligayang Araw ng Kalayaan. Sana lumaya na rin tayo sa mga pesteng pulitiko.

I don’t want tomorrow to come. I haaaate school.

MySQL on Slackware

This post is outdated. The updated version of this post has been moved here: MySQL on Slackware

If you’re using Slackware and you start up the mysql daemon and you get the error “[ERROR] /usr/libexec/mysqld: Can’t find file: ‘./mysql/host.frm’ (errno: 13)” from /var/lib/mysql/.err, consider changing the permissions on files /var/lib/mysql/* and /var/lib/mysql/mysql/*.

mysql_install_db_error.pngI’m running on Slackware 10.2 and I have Apache HTTPD 1.3.35, MySQL v14.12 dist 5.0.21 and PHP v5.1.2 installed. Upon running mysql_install_db, I got repeating lines of this error statement: [ERROR] /usr/libexec/mysqld: Can't find file: './mysql/help_relation.frm' (errno: 13).

To resolve this, change the permissions of the files under the directory /var/lib/mysql by typing:
chown mysql:mysql /var/lib/mysql/*
chown mysql:mysql /var/lib/mysql/mysql/*

Now you should be able to run the mysql daemon!
